More about Dr. Guarino

Dr. Guarino’s interest in pain management began during his undergraduate studies at Yale University where he majored in molecular biophysics and biochemistry. His interest in helping individuals with pain was further developed while obtaining a Masters in Religion degree at Yale Divinity School.

After obtaining his medical degree at the University of Maryland, he completed a one-year internship in medicine at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore and an anesthesiology residency and formal training in pain management at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (1993-1997). His training in pain management has included not only the training for injections with anesthesiology but also the surgical approach with neurosurgery as well as the psychological approach with psychiatry.

Dr. Guarino was recruited to direct the pain management services for Washington University at Barnes Jewish West County Hospital. Since arriving, he has focused on evaluating and treating not only the area of pain, but the whole person. Currently he oversees the management of one of the largest pain management practices in the midwest.

He has broad clinical interests, which include management of chronic/complex pain syndromes using interventional modalities and multidisciplinary pain management.

In addition to his clinical duties, he lectures regularly around the country on various pain management principles. He has published extensively in a variety of journals and recently completed the manuscript for his first book.

He resides in St. Louis with his wife and son. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, traveling and watching sports.
